How To Make A Combo Of Garbage Disposal Unit And A Dishwasher ?

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

It is not a difficult job to fit a garbage disposal unit in kitchen sink. There is no doubt that assembling its parts and checking it for no leaks is a time consuming exercise. And if we have a dishwasher, it will enhance the labor and time taken because dishwasher is emptied into the waste pipe. But with the fitting of the garbage disposal unit, the dishwasher is emptied in the garbage disposal.

Fortunately, attaching a garbage disposal to a dishwasher is easy. The article below familiarizes the homeowners with the steps to connect the garbage disposal with the dishwasher.

To begin this process we shall first of all clean the bottom of the sink cabinet and keep a bucket beneath the sink. Using a pipe wrench, loosen the pipe and remove it. Any water in the pipe may be disposed in the bucket. Remove the drain pipe by unscrewing the long screws that joins the sink and the drain pipe.

Use a small putty knife to trim away the old plumber’s putty that helped seal the drain inside the sink, and lift the drain pipe out of the sink.

Place a 1/4″ bead of plumber’s putty around the drain opening in the sink. Drop the new sink flange into the drain opening and press it into place. From under the sink, slide the fiber gasket and backup ring onto the sleeve. Hold these pieces in place. Next slip on the mounting ring and snap ring.

Align the disposer with the three mounting ears on the sink mounting assembly. Holding the disposer in place, turn the lower mounting ring until all three mounting ears are locked into the mounting assembly.

Bringing the mounting and the disposal in line, slightly turn the unit and it will tighten and get locked with a click sound. The wall drain pipe can then be connected with the unit and using the J-trap supplied by the manufacturer.

Plug the disposal plug into the outlet under the sink and press the red reset button on the underside of the disposal to set the system for use. Turn the water on at the sink and check for leaks. Operate the electrical switch above the sink to activate the disposal and make sure it turns on. Be sure the water is still running when you do this or it may damage the unit.

How To Install Under- Cabinet Puck Lights ?

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Deficient light in the kitchen makes the work not only boring but difficult. Improper light on the kitchen counter tops often seems to be a big problem when you are unable to even make out your doings. The way to solve this problem is to mount lighting to the underside of overhead cabinets.

Puck lights are therefore the best option to light up the counter tops of the kitchen. Puck lights are generally small and circular in shape and are mounted in the housing. Apart from providing bountiful light over the kitchen counters, these are a great way to enhance the beauty and grace to the kitchen.

If someone feels like installing these unique lighting fixtures then, following steps would surely help you out. Since, it is simply a do- it- yourself, you don’t need to rush to look for an electrician. Only thing you need is to gather some tools and equipments that you would be needing while installing the under-cabinet puck lights. Like for example, screwdriver, pencil and a wire cutter.

Deciding the place to locate the lights would be the first step here. Puck lights are usually installed in a string. Ensure, they are placed at equal distances and also, the gap between two lights should be around 12 to 18 inches.

In order to accurately place in the lighting fixtures, it is better to first mark the location with the pencil. The only thing that needs care and attention is, putting the puck lights right in the middle of the counter or the shelf. This is because, uniformity plays a vital role in under- cabinet lights.

Done with all the markings, now you are ready to put- in place the puck light housing. Hosing is basically a frame that holds the light. Safely install them. Also, fasten them with the nuts and bolts that are provided in the light kit. A small opening under the housing for wiring purpose should be unseen and covered.

Measure the distance from one light to another and between the power source to the first light to determine the length of your wiring. Cut the wires accordingly. Since, the puck lights are connected in series, these are operated using a single power source.

Put in the lights in the housing and then, check your installation by plugging in the electrical cord in the outlet. Since, it is dangerous to work with the live electricity, better turn off the main supply before doing any electrical job.

Why Water Heater Maintenance Is Essential ?

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

When you take a water heater you do not need to concern about its working as it will work by its own, but yes one important thing of concern is to maintain your water heater. Maintenance is very essential in order to maintain the efficiency and life of a water heater. Here we will discuss various steps needed to maintain your water heater but before that let’s see some basic problems occurring in the water heater.

The major problem that comes in a water heater after some time is corrosion. Keeping this thing in mind, water heaters are provided with an anode rod that protects the tank by pulling all the corrosive elements towards it. If this rod gets damaged, your water heater could go in big trouble.

The water that goes into water heater is contaminated with sediment and dust to some extent. Over a period of time, the sediment gets settled down at the bottom of the tank and lowers the efficiency of the burner. This causes more consumption of electricity by the heater. The accumulation of sediment at the bottom of the tank also gives birth to bacteria which in turn makes water smelly. There are many more problems that occur in a water heater, we will now find the solutions for these problems.

To maintain your water heater, the most important step is to inspect the anode rod twice in a year or more depending on how corrosive your water is. It can be removed from the top of the water heater. Before removing the rod, turn off the cold water inlet valve. If the anode looks like a worn wire then it means anode is required to be replaced.

Bottom of your tank has a lot of accumulated sediment. To remove that, you need to regularly flush your tank. For doing this you can connect a garden hose to the drain valve located at the bottom of the tank. After this, open the valve and allow the water to flow for several minutes. Be careful because the water coming out will be very hot.

Dip tube helps in connecting cold water supply to the water heater. A problem or damage in this pipe results in passage of cold water through shower heads or faucets. Hence, in such scenario, replace the dip tube with a fresh and new dip tube. Keep in mind that while replacing, you need to cut down the water supply.

The valves for maintaining the temperature and pressure (TP&R) in water heater need to be checked once in six month or so. You can check it by raising or lowering down the test lever. Periodic checking of it can reduce the leakage to a great extent.

Thermostat controls the water temperature. It also needs a periodic examination as a fault in thermostat can prove to be very dangerous for you. If thermostat can not read the right temperature of heater, the temperature of heater could go very high. To tackle these situations, call an experienced professional.

Roof Skylights And Leak Repairs

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Based on the fact that skylights interrupt and penetrate the surface of a roof, these are at higher risks of leaks and fissures. Rainwater flows down the roof, collects at the top of the skylight, builds up, and eventually finds a place around the edges where it can come drooling inside.

Improper sealing of the skylight joints, damaged roofing materials and corroded roof flashing are some of the other causes that make leaks to happen. Proper subsistence is very important and this will ultimately refrain your bank balance from being wasted on unexpected expenses.

The following part of the article will help the homeowners to guide the important ways by which they can effectively maintain their skylight and even repair the leaks, if any. You will be needing some very common tools that are usually lying at our places. If not, you can get them from any of the home improvement center. So, you need a ladder, stiff bristled brush, silicone caulk, roofing cement and caulk gun.

Now, to start with, first of all remove all the dirt and debris from the skylight. Better to use the a stiff bristled brush to neatly clean up the entire surface. Also, the broken sealant from the edges should be properly removed.

Overtime, the roof shingles or any other roofing material gets damaged that consequently causes the water to seep through the skylight. In such a situation you can just replace the broken shingle with a perfect one.

Leaks on the skylight should be repaired or mended with a quality sealant. Make sure, the sealant you chose is of prime quality. Use a silicone sealer or a urethane roofing cement to seal the edges of the skylight.

Sometimes, the seal is not the cause for the drippy skylights. Therefore, homeowners should check the flashing of the skylight. Mend the areas where you found the deteriorated flashing. The places where skylight and the roof meets is often suffered by leaks, check them carefully.

Seal any obvious holes, open seams or joints in the flashing, too. For this, you can use the same roofing cement. Also, fill in the leaks that originate in the frame that is holding the window. Since the leaks are sometimes very tiny and you can’t make them out easily. In that case apply the cement over the complete outer surface of the frame and the joints as well.

Is Your Water Safe For Drinking ?

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

With increasing industrialization and globalization, pollution is also rising at a tremendous rate. As the water is highly polluted, local water treatment can not remove all the impurities from water. To make your water safe for drinking, you need to take a device that can help you in purifying your water.

Filters, distillers and softeners are used to treat the impure water and make it fit for drinking. Most popular among these three are filters.

Distillation is a process in which water is heated up to boiling point and the steam is collected in a separate container which is later on condensed to get pure water. Water softening is a process of removing hardness causing minerals (calcium and magnesium) from water to make it fit for use.

Different kinds of filtering devices can be used in a filter like carbon filters, sediment filters and reverse osmosis unit. Reverse osmosis system is most costly among the three.

Carbon filters are designed to have a porous membrane that resists all the waste materials from passing through it. Faucet mount, Portable (pour through), Specialty (ice makers), Line by-pass (beneath the sink) (entering the house) and Stationary (under sink) filters are different types of carbon water filters.

Sediment filters, as the name suggest prevents any sediment or dust to pass through its filtering layer. This layer is either made of material like cellulose, rayon etc (such filters are called as fiber filters) or ceramic material (such filters are called as ceramic filters). The process of filtering out the impurities is almost similar but the difference lies in the kind of material used to filter out the impurity.

Reverse osmosis water purifier is the best choice if you want highly purified water. You need to spend quite large money in order to get this filter but once you will purchase it, you can free yourself from all the water diseases. This filter uses a semi permeable membrane for filtering impurities and some of the models also use a layer of carbon filters.

When it comes to choosing one among all these water treatment devices, you should go for a test of water that is supplied into your house. Through these tests, you can know which kind of contaminants are mostly present in your drinking water and can take a filtering device that can completely eliminate if from the water.
