I have worked as an attraction marketing and home business coach for some time now, and have had the opportunity to counsel many who are seeking a home based opportunity. There are many incentives to this type of business model, such as being able to set your own hours, having more time with family, and taking advantage of tax incentives. You can earn a generous part or full-time income in a work from home setting. However, you must consider your options when building or starting your home business.
As you consider your alternatives, there are two major work from home businesses: 1) a work from home opportunity; and 2) a work from home job. Many are not clear on these two distinctions, and it is important to know that they are very different.
A home business opportunity is a business that you own. You generally make a financial investment, and you are responsible for the success of your organization. Most opportunities are with an MLM or network marketing company, which allow you to partner with a larger and more established company to start your business. There are many benefits in starting this type of business, such as a comprehensive business development plan and an unlimited earning potential. Additionally, MLMs allow a business owner to earn residual income over a extended period of time based on the efforts of many teammates. This is like having many employees without any of the hassles and liabilities.
Initial investments for work from home business opportunities can range from about $35 to thousands depending on the company. You should evaluate the reputation of the company, the products offered, and the overall opportunity and not just the cost involved. Additionally, you should have a good understanding of any additional costs, such as monthly required orders. Some home business opportunities will require you to spend hundreds monthly on products, and even warehouse them for future orders. As a coach, I have encouraged my clients to fully evaluate any businesses that require stocking inventories, as you may be stuck with unsold product. There are many things to consider when evaluating a home business opportunity, and seeking the support of a mentor will help you to make a good decision.
A work from home job is very different, in that you are most often still working for an employer. Some organizations are now allowing employees to complete some or all of their duties from home; which gives you some flexibility in your job. However, many work from home jobs require you to be a contact employee and accept freelance positions, such as telemarketing, medical transcription, and editorial services. These positions are generally paid on a per assignment bases, which will often translate to an hourly wage of $10-25 per hour. In this capacity you will have many work from home benefits. However, you may have some periods of financial instability when work assignments are not available.
Many factors will lead to the success of your work at home venture. Most importantly: you need to treat your business like a business. The home environment can have many distractions that are absent in a typical office. While completing household chores may benefit your personally, it may impact you professionally and you need to maintain discipline by holding yourself accountable to complete many work tasks. In elementary school if you skipped school, you had to see the principal and likely your parents. However, in college you could do as you pleased, just like your work from home business. If you skip out no one will know or care, but you will likely fail in your efforts. Working from home has many rewards, but you must be self motivated and committed to create a successful business.
